  Sending and Receiving Attachments
  Some of your correspondents may send you attachments - separate files that are sent along with your email messages. You can also attach files to your outgoing messages - everything from word processing documents to digital photos, from spreadsheets to web pages.

If the attached file is a text file or a web page, Netscape Messenger will display it "inline" - at the end of the message. Other attachments will appear as links at the end of the message.

Receiving Attachments
You can save an attachment on your hard disk to work with it as a separate file or view it later using another application. If someone sends you a report created in a word processing application as an attachment, for example, you can save the report and then open it (and work with it) later in your word processing program.

  You Try It: Open or Save an Attachment

  1. In the Message window or the Message pane, click the paper clip icon to the right of the message header. A list of attachments will appear in a pane at the bottom of the message.

  2. Click the paperclip attachment icon to open it using Communicator; if another program is needed to view the attachment, you'll be prompted to save the file.

    or

    Right-click the attachment icon (click and hold the mouse button on a Mac), and from the pop-up menu that appears select Save Attachment As. The Save As dialog box will appear.

  3. Select the folder in which you want to save the attachment.

  4. If you like, type a new filename for the attached file in the filename text box.

  5. Click Save to save the attachment to your hard drive.
Sending Attachments

  You Try It: Attach a File to an Outgoing Email Message

  1. Create and address a message as you normally would.

  2. On the Messenger toolbar click and hold down the Attach button, and from the pop-up menu that appears choose File. The Attach file dialog box will appear.

  3. From your hard drive, select the file you want to include with the message.

  4. Click Open (Attach) to select the file.

  5. Repeat for each file you want to attach to this message.

  6. Send your message as usual.
  Tips for New Users
 
  • Tip: To attach a file that's on your desktop or in a folder, drag it into the attachments list in the message composition window.

  • Tip: If you don't want to view text and email attachments inline, you can toggle this preference off. From the Messenger menu bar, select View, View Attachments Inline. Repeat this step to view attachments inline. (When the menu option is checked, it's turned on.)

  • Tip: To see the attachment list, which displays the names of files you've attached to the message before sending it, click the paper clip tab to the left of the list of recipients.

  • Tip: To attach a web page you're viewing in Navigator, drag the page's icon from Navigator into the attachments list in the message composition window.

  • Tip: When someone sends you a web page, or when you email a web page to a friend who has Messenger or another web-friendly email program, the page will appear inline in the message window, with all the links and colors and formatting intact. You can also compose HTML mail messages using Messenger - that's what those fancy buttons are for. Read the section on Composer to find out more about making web pages.
