Many older web browsers, including versions of Netscape Navigator and Netscape Communicator, have a digital certificate that ensures secure, authenticated online transactions. If you have a Netscape browser version older than 4.06 (released in August, 1998), you should update your browser to ensure a continued smooth experience while conducting secure online transactions such as shopping. The current version of Netscape Communicator, 4.7, is available now via for Free Download or can be ordered on CD-ROM.

(Note: If you use newer Netscape versions 4.06, 4.07, 4.08, 4.5, 4.51, 4.6, 4.61 and the current version, 4.7, you do not need to upgrade..)

To update International browsers, read the following pages: Brazil, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan.

If I am using Netscape Communicator 4.05, or earlier, what will happen?
You may see the following dialog box on some secure websites after December 31, 1999. You may simply click Continue to make a secure connection. If you click Cancel, you will not be taken to the secure page. This dialog box will continue to appear each time you access these secure websites.

In addition, some versions of Communicator on certain platforms and operating systems (such as Macintosh or Windows) may experience uncertain behavior when trying to connect securely to websites. If you experience these problems you will need to upgrade your browser to the latest version.

If I continue using 4.05 will my online transactions continue to be secure?
Yes, you will continue to have secure connections and your credit card number and other personal information will remain as safe and secure as they were before.

How do I make the dialog box disappear?
Updating your Netscape browser to Netscape Communicator 4.7 is Free via Download at http://home.netscape.com/computing/download/index.html, or you can order a CD-ROM at http://cd.netscape.com.

How can I tell which version of Netscape I am running?
From the Help menu of your browser, choose About Communicator (in versions older than 4.0, choose About Navigator). This will show you in the top-center of the web page displayed what version of Netscape software you are using.

I am using a Windows 3.1 PC or a 68k Macintosh - what version of Netscape should I upgrade to?
The latest version of Netscape Communicator and Netscape Navigator for Windows 3.1 and 68k Macintosh computers is 4.08. Click here to find a version of 4.08 for your computer.

What if I do not wish to upgrade my browser?
If you wish to continue using your older version of Netscape Navigator or Communicator, you may have the dialog box shown above appear on screen when you go to some secure websites. You will then have to click on either Continue, to proceed with a secure transaction, or Cancel to not go to that web page.

Why will this dialog appear only when using older versions of browsers?
Secure Internet transactions are based upon websites identifying themselves with digital IDs known as "Certificates". For a company's Certificate to be widely recognized as valid, their Certificate should be issued by an established "Certificate Authority" (CA), such as VeriSign, Inc., which in turn must have its own ID, called a "CA Certificate". CA Certificates have expiration dates, similar to drivers' licenses and credit cards. The VeriSign Inc. CA Certificate included with older browsers expires at the end of December 1999. A newer VeriSign, Inc. CA Certificate is included in all versions of Netscape that have been shipping since August 1998.

(For Webmasters): How do I easily identify and communicate with visitors to my site that have older browsers?
Netscape has provided code and a pop-up image that you may serve to visitors to your site that have older browsers. The code will 'sniff' for older browsers, and serve to them the image below. To get the VeriSign Pop-up code into your page, please download a text file from here. Copy the included lines of code to your page:

JS popup

Note, this may result in two pop-up windows coming from your page if you should happen to already have a pop-up function running on you page.
