NETSCAPE SEES SERVER MOMENTUM ACCELERATE WITH NEW BENCHMARKS AND SUITESPOT 3.0 SERVERS

NETSCAPE DELIVERS MORE THAN 1 MILLION SERVERS IN 1996; CUSTOMERS INCLUDE CHRYSLER, LOCKHEED MARTIN, PRATT & WHITNEY, PRUDENTIAL, ROCKWELL AND US WEST

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 13, 1997) -- Netscape Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced it is seeing momentum accelerate for its award-winning Netscape SuiteSpot family of Intranet servers. The company delivered more than one million servers in 1996, including to Fortune 500 companies such as Chrysler, Lockheed Martin, Pratt & Whitney, Rockwell International and U S WEST, and security industry leaders National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) and Prudential Securities. By comparison, Netscape had announced last July that it had delivered more than 100,000 servers through sales and downloads in the second quarter of 1996.

Netscape continues to build its server momentum this week by announcing the availability of two more products in the new SuiteSpot 3.0 line: the final version of Netscape Proxy Server 2.5 and the beta version of Netscape Collabra Server 3.0. These products complement the recent availability of other SuiteSpot servers including shipping versions of: Netscape Media Server 1.0, Netscape Calendar Server 1.0, Netscape Directory Server 1.0 and Netscape Catalog Server 1.0 as well as the public beta version of Netscape Certificate Server 1.0.

"Customers worldwide have responded overwhelmingly to the flexibility, interoperability and freedom of choice that open standards-based network-centric software solutions provide to them," said Srivats Sampath, vice president of server product marketing at Netscape. "As a result, in less than a year Netscape SuiteSpot has become one of the most popular Intranet solutions available."

New benchmarks released by Netscape this week in conjunction with KPMG and Key Labs, Inc. show that Netscape SuiteSpot is a high-performance, scalable groupware solution. Testing revealed that Netscape Messaging Server, an open Internet messaging software, scales to support up to 4,500 simulated users concurrently per server. In addition, Netscape Collabra Server, an open Internet discussion server software, scales to support up to 6,000 simulated users concurrently per server. Netscape Enterprise Server software has also demonstrated its scalability by serving as the Web server software that fuels the Netscape Internet site, the most visited site on the Internet with over 120 million hits per day.

Customers are choosing Netscape SuiteSpot servers and Netscape Communicator client software as the open electronic mail, publishing and groupware solution for their corporate Intranets. According to a recent research report by Daniel Rimer at Hambrecht & Quist, more than 85 percent of Fortune 200 companies are currently implementing Intranet strategies with 60 percent adopting the full Netscape client/server platform. Since the software began shipping last June, SuiteSpot has received numerous industry awards including PC Week #1 New Product of 1996, Data Communications Tester's Choice, Network World 1996 Best Web Server, PC Magazine Top 50 Products of 1996 and InternetWork Magazine Product Award.

"We chose Netscape SuiteSpot servers as the foundation for our corporate Intranet because they deliver open, cross-platform functionality and highly scalable performance," said Dana Abrams, director of global initiatives at Rockwell International. "With SuiteSpot, we are building an open publishing solution that facilitates communication and collaboration among our 60,000 employees worldwide as well as with our customers and business partners."
