What Is the Internet?
The Internet is a giant network of computers, spanning the globe and connecting millions of individual computers just like yours. This enables you to communicate with computer users in other countries and to search for information that may reside on different computers in different areas of the world. Furthermore, you get to cruise around the world from the safety of your own PC, using normal phone lines-and without paying long-distance phone charges.
Once you're connected to the Internet, you can perform a variety of tasks: You can send and receive email, exchange messages in topic-specific newsgroups, upload and download files, and search for all sorts of information on the World Wide Web. All you have to do is establish an Internet connection, launch the right software, and you're ready to cruise the Net!
