Fancy Web Pages
In addition to the common elements listed in Table 1.1, some Web pages use more advanced features. It's not uncommon to encounter pages that include
- Animated graphics These are pictures that move like animated characters or incorporate some type of special effect. Normally, you don't have to do anything to view the animation; it occurs automatically.
- Movies Yes, the Web can broadcast full-motion video. (It just takes a lot of time to download to your computer, is all.)
- Sounds Sounds on the Web can range from simple clicks and beeps to fully orchestrated background music in the MIDI format used by professional musicians. In addition, many Web sites offer compact disc-quality music in the new MP3 format.
- Interactive applets Some Web sites even include interactive programs (called applets) that let you perform specific tasks in real-time. Applets are often created using special Web programming languages, such as Java, Dynamic HTML, or ActiveX, and can include stock tickers, biorhythm charts, and other such utilities.
To view some of these special effects, you may need to download and install special "plug-ins" to your Web browser. In most cases you are prompted if your browser does not currently employ these plug-ins; you can download most plug-ins from the same site where you downloaded your browser software.
 |
Plug-in An add-on to a Web browser that allows it to perform some specific function. For example, a Shockwave plug-in allows the browser to display animations created with Macromedia's Shockwave program. |
