Troubleshooting Possible Problems with SmartUpdate

Lesson Content

Because SmartUpdate is a service that you use to install other software programs-and because it works automatically, behind the scenes-you can sometimes run into problems when trying to download a new program. While most users encounter no difficulties, on rare occasions some users have had trouble completing a SmartUpdate-assisteddownload.

If you do happen to run into a problem downloading programs with SmartUpdate, Netscape recommends that you try the following solutions, in the order listed:

  • Clear Netscape Navigator's memory cache. Pull down the Edit menu, select Preferences, click Advanced, click Cache, and then click the Clear Memory Cache button.
  • Check that you have Java and JavaScript enabled in Netscape Navigator. From the Edit menu, select Preferences, then click Advanced. See that the check boxes next to Enable Java and Enable JavaScript are selected.
  • Make sure that you have SSL (Secure Socket Layer) enabled in Netscape Navigator. Click the security padlock icon at the bottom-left corner of the browser screen to display the Security Info window. From this window, click the Navigator link, then check that all Enable SSL options are checked.
  • Make sure that you have cookies enabled in Netscape Navigator. Pull down the Edit menu, select Preferences, click Advanced, and see that the check box next to Enable Cookies is selected.
  • Empty the \ windows\ temp directory on your PC by using My Computer or Windows Explorer to delete all files from that directory. (Do not delete any files currently in use; Windows warns you if you try to do so.)

If you continue to have problems with SmartUpdate, read the online FAQ at help.netscape.com/kb/netcenter/971023-6.html. It's possible, in some instances, that you'll have to choose to download normally without using SmartUpdate.

In this lesson you learned how to install the latest version of Netscape Communicator on your personal computer using SmartUpdate. In the next lesson you learn how to use some special features of Netscape Navigator that make it easier to use Netscape Netcenter content and services.
