Fine-Tuning Your Netscape Search

The problem with searching the Web is that even a basic search can return hundreds, even thousands of matching pages. How can you narrow your search to return only the most relevant results?

Netscape Search has several ways for you to fine-tune your search and return fewer but better results. Table 9.1 lists some of the more common commands you can enter into the query box to narrow your search parameters.

Table 9.1  NETSCAPE SEARCH PARAMETERS

To Do This

Use This Command

Example

Search for part of a word

*

mon*

Include both the words

AND

monty AND python

Include at least one of the words

OR

monty OR python

Exclude pages that contain a word

ANDNOT

monty ANDNOTpython

Search for a complete phrase

" "

"monty python"

Only search in the title of the page

TITLE:

TITLE:
monty python

The Automatic AND  If you enter more than one word in a query with no operator between them, Netscape Search assumes you want to look for both words and automatically inserts an AND between the words.

Here are some examples:

  • Searching for mon* returns pages dealing with money, monsters, and Monty Python (you're only searching for part of a word).
  • Searching for monty OR python returns pages about guys named Monty or pythons or Monty Python (you're searching for either monty or python, remember-not necessarily both on the same page).
  • Searching for monty ANDNOT python returns pages about guys named Monty but does not return pages about Monty Python (you're excluding python pages from your results).
  • Searching for monty AND python returns Monty Python pages or pages about pythons owned by guys named Monty (you're searching for both the words, but not necessarily in order).
  • Searching for "monty python" only returns pages about the British comedy troupe Monty Python (you're searching for both the words, in order).

In addition, you can use parentheses much like you would in a mathematical equation to group portions of queries together to create more complicated searches. For example, if you want to search for all pages about Monty Python that include either John Cleese or Eric Idle but not Terry Jones, you enter the search phrase:

"monty python" AND ("john cleese" OR "eric idle") ANDNOT "terry jones"

More Netscape Search Tips  Improve your search by using even more Netscape Search tips:

  • Enter more than one word in your query to help Netscape Search get a handle on the concept you're looking for.
  • Use descriptive or specific words to narrow your search.
  • Click the More Like This link to find pages similar to an already found good match.
  • Add more words to your search from the recommended list to narrow the search results.
