Posting an Online Résumé

One way to find a job is for you to look for an employer; another way is to have potential employers look for you. The Netscape Career Center lets you post your résumé online, where it can viewed by potential employers as part of the Monster.com service.

Follow these steps to post your online résumé:

  1. From the Netscape Career Center page, click the Post a Résumé link.
  2. When the Résumé Builder page appears (see Figure 21.2), fill in your contact information in the first section as requested.

Figure 21.2  Post your résumé online through Netscape Netcenter's Career Center.

  3. Go to Section 2: Are you willing to relocate? Answer appropriately-and add any comments you might have about relocation (such as where you might be willing to relocate).
  4. Go to Section 3: What type of job are you looking for? Enter whether you want a Full Time, Part Time, Permanent, or Contract position (you can select more than one choice).
  5. Go to Section 4: What is your minimum compensation requirement? Enter your desired yearly or per hour salary; do not enter commas or dollar signs.
  6. Go to Section 5: What is your highest level of education? Select your education level from the pull-down list.
  7. Go to Section 6: Please indicate your current U.S. work status. Select one of the three options (most U.S. citizens will select the first option).
  8. Go to Section 7: Enter a title for your résumé. Type in a title that indicates the type of position you're seeking, as well as a few keywords describing your skills. Examples might be "Technical Writer Computer Industry" or "Sales Representative Agricultural Products."
  9. Go to Section 8: Type or paste the body of your résumé in plain text or HTML. If you already have a résumé created with your regular word processor, copy the text from there and paste it into the Section 8 text box. If you're starting from scratch, type the text for your résumé directly into the text box.

Make It Plain...  When you enter or paste text into the text box, you have to remove all formatting, such as boldface and italic. You also have to use your Enter key at the end of each line, since the text box doesn't have "auto-wrap" capabilities. In addition, your Tab key does not function in this text box, so you have to remove all the tabs in your document-use the Spacebar to insert extra spaces, if needed.

...Or Pretty It Up with HTML  If you know basic HTML formatting, you can boldface, italicize, and otherwise format the text in your résumé. If you submit your résumé in HTML, make sure to place the <HTML> tag at the very start of the résumé and the </HTML> tag at the end, then use normal HTML codes as appropriate (such as <B>text</B> to boldface text, or <I>italicize</I> to italicize text). If you wish to include hyperlinks to other Web pages, make sure to include the full http:// address. If you don't know HTML, don't bother with it!

  10. When you're done entering your résumé information, click the Submit This Résumé Now! button.

Your résumé is now entered in the Monster.com database, where potential employers can see it.

Edit Your Résumé  The next time you click the Post a Résumé link, you'll be taken to the Edit Résumé page, where you can edit the information in your résumé. Make any changes to your résumé on this screen, then click the Submit button. Important: If you do not click the Submit button, your new résumé will not appear online!
